First Nations Rangers Program

For tens of thousands of years, Aboriginal peoples have cared for Country through sophisticated systems of knowledge, responsibility and custodianship. The Jellurgal First Nations Rangers Program is continuing this legacy. 

This program is a community-led initiative that is grounded in Belonging, Being and Becoming by combining cultural authority, connection to Country, environmental management, and intergenerational knowledge transfer. 

Located at the foot of Jellurgal (Burleigh Headland), the program supports the preservation of the Yugambeh language region and cultural heritage of Kombumerri Country.

The Rangers are responsible for environmental management, cultural heritage protection, land and sea management, and data collection and reporting. 

Jellurgal is striving to build a strong Ranger workforce that cares for Country, educates community, preserves cultural knowledge and creates pathways for First Nations people.  

The program operates under Kalwun Development Corporation and is guided by Elders and Traditional Custodians on an Advisory Committee. National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA) is funding the program and Jellurgal is also working with many partners including Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
